8th Asia Member Care Network Conference 2025

Sustainable Ministry and Sacrifice for Long-Term Missionary Success

The Asia Member Care Network (AMCN) Conference began in 2008 under the leadership of Dr. Wilson Phang, the late Dr. David Tan, and a working committee of seven members. It is a network of people and a platform for care providers from missions agencies, and non-profit governmental and humanitarian organizations. The conference exists to build, encourage, equip, and network in a supportive environment. Our partners and sponsors have been Barnabas International (which has helped us process registration for many years!), Heartstream Resources USA/New Zealand, and The Well, Thailand.

On April 19, 2023, participants at the seventh AMCN Conference were informed that David Tan was very sick amidst discussions of the future of AMCN. The next day, my daughter and I flew to Singapore, picked David up, then flew to California. In May 2023, he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer (nonsmokers). On March 28, 2024, after about a nine-month fight with cancer, he was promoted to glory.

Upon his passing, I began to revisit my own personal full-time ministry commitment, made in 1978. On May 6, 2024, a personal friend of both of us made a casual mention that David had emailed him on November 21, 2023, saying, “I am beginning to dream again this morning.” It felt as if David was talking to me.  God had granted David a three-month recovery period to dream and plan the eighth AMCN April 2025 conference; he thought he was going to live to see it happen! In God’s sovereignty, he was called home. Lining up with my full-time ministry commitment, the timing of David’s passing, and my passion for member care, I resigned from my work to be in full-time ministry, beginning with David’s dream for the 8th AMCN April 2025 Conference in Penang.

It is my honor and privilege to present to you the 8th AMCN April 2025 Conference, “Ministry and Sacrifice: Sustainable Service.

Missionaries give their all to fulfill the call of obedience in the field, learning a new language and culture. Together with home assignments, a packed schedule including traveling at least an hour and a half, and living in a different home each—really missionaries have two full-time, 24/7 jobs. Drs. Lois and Larry Dodds (Heartstream Resources) reported that missionaries peaked at a 600 stress level year after year (200 is the normal stress level).

Our hope and prayer is that the keynote speaker, Scott Shaum, and the various workshops will help all of us to pause, hear, reflect, and live God’s call in our lives for the long haul, in sustainable and kingdom service for the glory of God!
